EAST HARTFORD

PETITION DRIVE

FOR

BUDGET REFERNDUM

Some Property Tax Increases

Range from 25% to 80%

I have compiled a random list of properties to determine what the tax consequence would be based both on Mayor Currey’s budget and the budget as approved by the Town Council, with a one year phase in.   According to my calculations, the increase in real estate property taxes is not an average of 11% as has been reported by the press.  Instead, for many, their real estate property taxes this year will increase anywhere from 25% to 80%, as reflected on the attached excel spreadsheet.  Next year, homeowners will see an even greater increase in their property taxes.

Example:  Property taxes on a commercial building on Sterling Street decreased while the nearby residential home increased 33% under the Council’s Budget and 43% under Currey’s.   The Sterling St. homeowners will pay a 33% increase this year in their property taxes and an increase over 40% next year!

The Town Council adopted budget will cause many to lose their homes to either foreclosure or tax lien sales.  For this reason, the East Hartford Taxpayers Association is beginning a petition drive to place the 2007-2008 Budget before the voters at a referendum.

Approximately 4,000 signatures must be obtained within 15 days from the time the petitions were obtained from the Town Clerk on March 16.

The following are the dates and locations where the petitions can be signed.  Petitions are also available for those who wish to collect signatures.
